Q. How harmful are termites to my home?
A. Termites are not merely a nuisance. In the southwestern U.S. alone, termites cause around $1.5 billion a year in wood structure damage. Once inside the house, the insects can also eat carpeting, paper and even plastic pipes. Because termites hide so well, you may not notice an infestation until your home is already severely damaged.
Q. What method do you use to eliminate termites?
A. We use a baiting system. Our trained technicians place pesticide-baited wood at strategic locations in the yard around the home's perimeter. Termites eat the bait, then take it to their nest, where the rest of the colony ingests it and dies.
Q. When my friend in Florida had termites, her exterminator enclosed her house in a plastic covering and set off a bug bomb. Can you get rid of my termites this way?
A. Magic Touch Exterminating does not use the structural fumigation method ("bug bomb") to eliminate termites, for two important reasons. First, structural fumigation is most effective against drywood termites, which are common in Florida, Texas and other warm coastal areas of the U.S. Here in New York, the most common variety of termite is the eastern subterranean termite, which responds much more effectively to underground baiting methods.
Secondly, the strong chemicals used in structural fumigation can seep into the soil, which can pose both an environmental and a health hazard. New York's water source is an aquifer - meaning we collect our water from the rocks and soil. We are committed to eliminating pest problems while keeping our environment safe.
Q. I know an exterminator who drills holes right into the house and pumps an insecticide inside. Do you use this method?
A. We do not recommend this method as a primary way to treat termites. The pesticides used in these treatments also pose a danger to our water system. In addition to using underground baiting treatment, Magic Touch Exterminating may inject an environmentally responsible termite treatment foam into the structure of the home.
